Living in small or big town

Today i would like to say a few words about living in a small town vs big town. Life far from civilization, where thera are no computers, telephones, cars or any kind of modern technology is many people's dream.

A few of my friends from high school lived in small towns. I have always wondered why so many young people decided to move to large cities. The countryside is said to be more peaceful, the air is clean, you can't get lost, and what's most important - you never run out of parking places. People always find the time to sit down and talk, the pace of life is slower, there is very little crime. Everyone knows each other so there is no problem finding any kind of specialist when you need help with the car or your cow. Car alarms don't go off all night and there is a lot of empty spaces to run across with your dog. Unfortunately, in case of an emergency, a doctor is usually very far away, unless your neighbour happens to be one.

So what makes people move out off the countryside and into the city?

The answer is quite easy. The first, and the most important, issue is education. In a small town there are very few primary schools, a high school is rare, and a university has never even been heard of. This forces people looking for education to move to larger cities or towns. Even studing on-line could be troublesome since there is no internet in some small towns. Not much is going on in a small town, making it hard to find a well paid job. It is hard to find any job at all.

However, moving is no small cost, so many people decide to stay. I consider myself lucky, because I got the chance to move to a large city having lived in a medium sized town, thanks to which I am getting an education. The issue of traffic jams and lack of parking places you say? Well I found a simple solution. I drive a motorcycle. Luckily, my cat doesn't mind living inside so the open spaces are not an issue. Living in the city allows me to see my friends without having to travel to another city.

Questions:

Have you ever lived in a very small town?

What are the pros and cons of living in a large city?

Do you plan to move to a larger/smaller town someday?

  1. I come from a small town and I'm glad that I grew up there. Small towns have their soul to the climate. Pros of living in a small town it is close to everything and knows everything. The big downside is that everybody knows everything about yourself in the know. Now I live in Warsaw and travel annoyed me, everything is far away.

  2. I live in a village, but near Warsaw - about 40 km. I study and work in Warsaw, but my dream is to work somewhere nearby my home, not in city. I don't like big vity, it's noisy, dirty and too many people around. I prefer living closer to nature, having my own garden and forest next to my house. Worse thing is, that I have to plan very carefully where i'm going and how i can get home to my village ;)

  3. Much part of my early life was on the countryside. Freedom to do anything is huge there. Nonetheless, when I started high school, those places started to be just boring. Don't get me wrong, but there isn't much to do for fun on the countryside. At least for me. Another thing, information technology isn't the hobby to be properly developed in such a place.

  4. I used to live in Chisinau for few years. It is also a capital city but not so big as Warsaw is. As I can remember I liked this town but I'd prefer to come back to Warsaw. Moldova has still the communist, lagging economy and the corruption is very common.
In big city you have more opportunities to find a good job, there is also more interesting things to do and to develop your self in many different fields. One of disadvantage of living in big town is that people live very fast and they often forget about the most important values like health, love, real friendship and so on...
I think that in the future for sure I would like to move to smaller, more quite, more romantic place;)

I lived in radom as a child. I donl't remember those times. But I know that I couldn't live there. I love big cities and crowded streets. I feel that I live when i see a lot of different people.

What are the pros and cons of living in a large city?

    Pros:
    You can be anonymous
    You can meet different people
You can do whatever You like
    and many others.

I live in warsaw on the suberbs so I have two in one. All day I spend in the city and I love rush hours and when I get tired I go home and i have beautiful forest in front of my house.

  6. I live in Warsaw (actually at the very border of the city) and for me it's perfect. It's quite peaceful here, lots of trees, big open spaces but it's enough to catch a train and in 15 minutes I'm in the city center.
Big cities offer more of everything - shops, cinemas, parks, jobs etc.
I don't really plan of moving.

  7. I come from Warsaw and I was living there for over thirteen years in a flat. Now I live in a small town near to Warsaw (Łomianki) in a single-family home. Both places have pros and as well cons. For sure when you live in a city like Warsaw, especially very close to city center, you don’t waste your time in traffic jams. But living in a flat is horrible. Everyone hears knocking and other freaking noises coming from other neighbors. If you live on the eighteenth floor, for example, what are you going to do when elevator breaks down? Other problem is abnormal neighbors and theirs dog, cats etc. I will never forget such situation: It was Friday morning.. Ready to go to school young boy (yes that’s me) met a pile of shit next to the door of elevator. Of course there was no perp or witnesses.. I think, living in a small town (very close to larger city) have more pros because there are not such situations like these mentioned before. But sometimes I used to drive in a jam for 1,5h to get to work or school which is not good at all.

  9. I’ve been living in Warsaw for whole my life. It’s hard to me to specify differences of living in a small or big city.
My only experience is related with saying in a big. So it’s:
    - crowdy like hell,
    - noisy like hell,
    - stinky like hell,
    - and all the time all are in a big rush…
But I like it. I don’t have to spend several hours going the distance: work-home. Everything is close to each other. Don’t have to concern about flooding or other disasters, wild animals, other opinion. As the previous writer said…you can stay more anonymous. Are there any cons? I don’t know. Maybe still increasing number of residents?
The most embarrassed thing to me is…people who decided to move to the big city and after few weeks of living they’re more “Warsaw resident” then others. Swaggering, strutting, boasting…
Do I want to move out of Warsaw? Yes, but maybe on a retirement.

  10. 1. I have never lived in a very small town, rather in a medium sized. I cannot imagine being a citizen of small town. It is because my privacy is species to me and I have bigger aspirations that I can only fulfill in a big, modern city that can provide me with many different possibilities.
    2. When I came back to the city I was born in I always miss the peacefulness and quietness and low speed of life which I cannot find in Warsaw. Here everything is a lot faster and I am always late ;).
    3. For now I tie my future with Warsaw. Next month I am going to buy an apartment. Where else would someone with IT education have better perspectives than here.

  11. Actually I live in village which has less than 300 citizens. But still it is near quite big city, something about 400 tousends of citizens, so I never feel like living in the village. I feel like I am living out of town simply.

There are plenty of advantages of living in big cities for example possibility to meet new people, there are more places you can go out every night and there are better job opportunities. But there are also disadvantages like you don't feel like in your place, streets are dirty, there is rat race.

I plan to stay in my hometown which is Bydgoszcz, I don't like Warsaw :)

  12. I`m from the small town - Grodzisk Maz. I liked it a lot, but after some time I was tired with coming to Warsaw every day. So I decided to move to Warsaw, and I think this was a great decision. I`m working and studding at the same time so I save a lot of time when I`m living in Warsaw. I think that big town is not the best environment for rising children, so some day I will probably come back to Grodzisk :)

  13. Have you ever lived in a very small town?
Depends on what you mean by saying "small" :) I've been leaving in Olsztyn until the age of 19. Olsztyn has a population of about <180k people, so it's rather a medium city. I really like to be there, even though it gets boring during a longer stay.

What are the pros and cons of living in a large city?
Obviously - facilities and services. I love wall climbing and I would love to try parachuting. Warsaw gives me this opportunity in almost every part of the town :) In Olsztyn for example, I couldn't play snooker with my mates nor would I have so many clubs / pubs / restaurants to choose from :)

Do you plan to move to a larger/smaller town someday?
Currently I'm staying in Warsaw. That's for sure. I have plans for future, but till the future comes it's considered to be top secret :)

  15. I lived in a small town from birth day. Now I live in Warsaw because here I study and working. Live is easier in big city, there are more options for work, own business and activity... but big cities are noisier and live is faster.
There is no problem for me. I live in Warsaw and feel good here. I don't think about plan to move to smaller town.

  16. I have been living in a very small city for a long time and I can give a lot of pros. I know most poeople personally, I can go everywhere on foot and all those peace and quiet... On the other hand, I live in Warsaw now and I really appreciate the fast speed of life and wide range of faciltates and places of entertainment. But I would like to get older in a small city. Big city is too loud.

  17. My home is placed in Anin - it's a part of Warsaw but it feels like a small town. It's a really lovely place - especially for kids - there's a nice forest around and a lot of calm streets where you can go with a dog or ride a bike. Still, I can go to the city centre in only 30 minutes by bus. I hope to live in a similiar place in the future, but recently prices of grounds in places like Anin are extremly high.

  18. The perfect solution is to live in smallest city not so far from the capital. After work or day of studying it is great to see behind yours back this great buildings, and have filling that all noises, crowds and troubles rested there. But crowds are from time to time desired. if it is to calm it may be boring. In big agglomerations life is dynamic and more demanding and it is what many of us are searching.
