Abortion

Nowadays abortion is a field of war between two fighting communities. One, called “pro-choice”, promotes abortion as a natural free choice of every pregnant woman, who can independently decide if she wants to have her baby born or not. Another, called “pro-life”, believes that every tiny human being has the right to be born and live. It seems that any comprehension of these two groups is impossible, although they both declare to care of human life and women’s health.

During ages, there always were some unwanted pregnancies. Because of many circumstances women of different cultures and times were trying to hide their gravidity and kill their embryos. Some of them succeeded, some died because of the complications, some other had their babies born.

Due to development of medicine number of complications caused by abortion in Europe is constantly falling, but still there are many negative consequences. These are among others infections, hemorrhages, infertility and stillbirths in later life. There are also problems connected with mental heath named Post-Abortion Syndrome. It may include post-traumatic stress, sexual dysfunction or even severe depression leading to a suicide. Pro-life groups cite research from New Zealand proving 30% increase of mental disorder or Finnish study showing 6 times higher suicide rate among women who had decided for this procedure. In the same time pro-choice organizations declare that there is no medical prove of any mental consequences of having abortion. Both sides present different numbers and examinations to discredit opponents.

Arguing about women’s health pro-choice submits that negative consequences of abortion are much more serious in cases of illegal operations. Sterile conditions and qualified doctors support health of women and can save it when something goes wrong. In poorly developed countries abortion is numbered fourth among reasons of women’s death. Pro-life answers are the best way to protect women’s health. And what about tiny “future-women” in their mothers’ wombs? Why the pro-choice don’t care about their health?

Here we come to an essential point of this discussion. If it starts somewhere, it must be at the very beginning of human life. Pro-life activists declare that every human life needs to be protected and it doesn’t matter how old it is or if it is already born. Pro-choice always prefer quality of life of possible mother than its fetus’ life. They say it’s only “a set of cells”.

It’s interesting, that in the 21st century, when we know how to save health and life of immature babies in their mothers’ wombs, which is usually expensive, we also spend money on killing other babies in other women’s wombs. So, when does human life begin? It seems that now we are ones who decide. If a woman wants to have a baby, she calls her 2-week fetus “her baby” and has no doubt that it is a human creature. She loves it from the beginning and does her best to ensure it a good development. When a woman doesn’t want her baby to be born, she doesn’t call it “a baby”, she talks about unwanted pregnancy as a kind of disease.

If we think who are people from these two fighting groups, we may contrast feminists and Catholics. In fact it doesn’t show the whole true. There are feminists who are pro-life (check: http://www.feministsforlife.org/who/aboutus.htm) as well as antiabortionists who have different religious views. The fact is that abortion is a huge business subsidized in many countries so definitely we can call it a lobby group.

There are plenty of people somewhere in the middle of this battle of views, who are against abortion but they accept it in some conditions. Polish law is a good example of this kind of compromise. Abortion in Poland is banned except in the following three circumstances:

1. When the woman's life or health is endangered by the continuation of pregnancy,

2. When the pregnancy is a result of a criminal act, or

3. When the fetus is seriously malformed.

Actually these reasons are in minority between ones given for having abortion. These come from USA

The situation is diverse in different countries:

but still it seems that difficult reasons mentioned in Polish law are incidental.

How many pregnancies in Europe are aborted?

Well, these numbers are impressive for me. The situation in Russia or Romania looks dramatic.

Moreover, I want to show you two moving videos for your own consideration:

1. What do you think about it? Are you more pro-choice or rather pro-life?

2. When does human life begin and who should decide about it?

3. Do you accept Polish law solution in this matter?

  1. I personally do not believe in this chart about aborted pregnancy in Europe ... For me it does not look realistic.

    > Are you more pro-choice or rather pro-life?
I think with depends on the individual person and his situation, in my opinion you can not force your will to somebody else ...

    > Do you accept Polish law solution in this matter?
No, I believe that abortion should be legal, but not only as a medical procedure. In my opinion, abortion should be preceded by interview mental, to assess whether the decision is taken under the influence of emotion or other factors. Just as the sex change ...

  2. I wonder why don't you believe in the map-chart about Europe: do you think there is more or less abortions?
    Anyway, here's the source:

Official abortion statistics are often low due to incomplete reporting.

  3. Abortion should be legal in particular with regard to health or even life of the mother. We must distinguish between the possibility of abortion due to fear of childbirth, for example, because the mother did not plan to become pregnant, and abortion, which not only affects the health of the mother, but also the child. Most of us would like to have a healthy baby. What, however, when doctors at an early stage can conclude that the child will be handicapped? For a child it will be a life of suffering and for the mother, too. I'm not saying that a handicapped child can not be as happy as a healthy child, but usually this family has simply a much harder life and so they should have the possibility to decide.

  4. I'm against abortion, but I think you can't tell people which choices can they make and which they can't, and it doesn't at abortion. Abortions have always been and will be done, regardless of the law; a woman who wants an abortion will do it, even if it's illegal, which means she will have to rely on unreliable underground doctors, who shouldn't do it at all. That's why I think law shouldn't control us. In making such choices people should use their morality and not only base it on the state law.

  5. Well it is really controversial topic. I think that abortion is not dependent on no situation on somebody's life even a mother.

Family of handicapped child should have the possibility to decide?

But why? Why his family? Because it is convenient to avoid a trouble? The only right to decide his life have a child and nobody else. We don't know if a death is better for that child. Moreover there was so many cases that prenatal examination shows that a embryo has some defect but the born child was absolutely healthy. Don't you belive in miracles? Furthermore even a handicapped child can be place in orphanage if we really cannot keep him. But maybe we feel inconvenient with a thought that he/she was a real and it would be better for us if he disappeared?! Don't you think that in our consumptive, commercial and selfish World people are very egoistic and any sacrifice is really rare?

For me an abortion is a murder and I am absolutely against!

  7. Małgosia - so, imagine the situation: You are pregnant and you get to know that your baby is really sick, doctors offer you a legal abortion but you have a choice: to have a really hard time to the rest of your life with handicapped child, spending all your money for rehabilitation that are not bringing any effects, finally to loose all your hope and relatives people and from nice, young girl change in to lonely, embittered woman... OR to avoid it and have a chance to have a healthy baby in the future??? Think about it...

I am rather pro-choice but in my opinion the abortion should be legal in particular cases, regarded to life and mental condition of mother (parents), mother and embryo age and health condition and so on.

To make this really difficult decision law and people ought to not be so strict! All is about happiness of mother and baby, happiness of both!!!

  8. Firstly everyone who is pro-abortion should know how it looks like. Many people think that an embryo is unlike human. That it is something shapeless. It is not true. Some of that people should watch a film about an abortion, a small dismembered body... it is really horrible...

Before we decided that we are pro we should think about the embryos as a future children.
I don't want to describe you what I have seen in that film but I really recommend you to consider a topic once again.

  9. It's controversial topic as Małgorzata wrote. I'm not sure if I'm pro or against.
I think it's depends on specific situation.

When human life begin…oh god so hard question. For catholic it's begin with fertilization. But I don't think I agree with that. Moreover I guess it's better for these unborn childs or rather embryos to be unborn than be unwanted. How many kids appear in this world and suffer so much due to lack of love or good living conditions. But to prevented such a situations we all have to be more responsible and require this responsibility from others.

However there's some special cases in which womens should have a right to choose if they want to have an abortion or not.

  10. The only one thing I want to say kniaz is sacrifice. I know my morality and I also know that in our life sometimes there are some situations which we would like to avoid but we can't. Building our happiness on such a horrible another thing.

How I said before there was many cases that prenatal examination shows that a embryo has defect but the born child was absolutely healthy! And do you think that it is possible to live with a thought that sometimes prenatal examination can make a mistake and you did an abortion due to a fear that you child can ruin your happy life?! Isn't it cruel?

    ReplyDelete
  11. We cannot decide for anyone if it is better for him to be unborn or not. It is better for us because we will not have a problem! What a horrible thought. Even a handicapped child can bring a lot of good. Do you think that they have no right to live because they are different... oh come on! I know some handicapped children and people who work with them. It is a really hard work but it brings a good resuls. Because of that they are becoming more and more social and agile. What is the most important- maybe they cannot do a lot of things that we do but they are able to love so hard and sincerely that many of us can't.
Perhaps you don't know such a handicapped person and it is a reason that you think that for some of them it is better to not be born.

What is more we cannot imagine that we are in such a horrible situation and talking what we would do if... for me is senseless.

  12. Asia you know that because of your presentation I can't sleep well at night. I had such a terrible thoughts:)

  13. Abortion is a very hard topic! According to me this topic should be a personal metter.
When does human life begin? hmm it's depends in some religion begins from conception for science not necessarily.
I don't accept our law in this issues. As I wrote at the beginning abortion should be a personal issue.

    ReplyDelete
  14. In my opinion prevails that the abortion is necessary and should be legal. But the church does not allow abortion even when the mother's life is in danger! Plus the various incurable diseases with which the child will have to cope, and parents, it will cost them a fortune...
In these exceptional cases, by far the abortion should be permitted. Worse, when it comes to children, brought to the orphanages, because parents are too young, irresponsible, they are unable to give a child living in prosperity. If the world was full of people responsible, it would be better.

  15. This is complicated and very difficult subject. And there's only one thing I’d like to say .. Gosia's involvement in this issue is important :)

  16. Hard to say.
It looks completely different from men point of view. And actually I've never been a women so far. I'm sure that here we can separate two groups, not pro and against - but men and women. In that case our considers wouldn't be equal.

Also I cannot say if I'm pro-abortion or rather pro-life. It mostly depends on situation. But giving people too much freedom in choices could cause a terrible consequences.
I'm definitively against stupidity. And rule "drunk don't drive" becomes more wide. I cannot stand sorrows and tears of very young girls which had a unpleasant accident during alcohol party. Didn't think about consequences of their choices. People received brain just to use it.

On the other hand when I look on those young 'mothers' yelling, shouting and tousling their kids...

  17. You wrote that abortion should be a personal issue but did you think about doctors. What about their free choice? In some countries where it is legal they cannot refuse doing an abortion due to low. Is it OK? Nobody think about it! It is not only a matter of people who don't want to have a child but also a person who is forced to do it. What if he doesn't want to do it because it is inconsistent with his morality, conscience or faith.

    ReplyDelete
  18. It's a hard theme for me, but if I get pregnant I want to give my child life. I'll never choice abortion! I've so much respect for life.

    ReplyDelete
  19. 1. What do you think about it? Are you more pro-choice or rather pro-life?

I'm pro-nothing or pro-don't-care. :) It's the same with drugs - if someone wants to have an abortion she will have it, she will find a way. We should help and educated not judge or attack. We also should consider that many of the not wanted babies are murdered by their mothers after the birth. There are many stories about it. We should consider that if the abortion was legal those women maybe chose it and didn't do it by their own hands.

    2. When does human life begin and who should decide about it?

I don't have opinion about it. For me if pro-lifers say that even embryo is a human then why when we born our age is counted from zero? Not from the day of our conception?

    3. Do you accept Polish law solution in this matter?

For me it's fair. You shouldn't have to gave birth to the result of a rape.

  20. 1)

I'm against abortion in general not for ethical but for practical reasons because it's a delayed demographic bomb which will decimate the population which allows it over the years.

For example I've read some time ago that there are more abortions in Russia then child births.

In United States there are about 800k abortions per year, that's much more then America had lost in all it's wars since 1776 taken together.....

For me such big loss is unacceptable, if we had overpopulation like in China we could discuss whether it's ethical or not, but in case of Poland it would be demographic suicide.

    2)

I'm not a scientist so I won't tell you this

    3)

It's fine in general although I'd change some things to make it more efficient.

  21. I’m more pro-choice. Politicians and catholic people shouldn’t decide for people if they want to have a baby or not. On the other hand, it’s very controversial and should be done in the most “human” way. The earlier the better. Polish law in this case is a big joke. Everybody knows that you can open newspaper and you will find a place where they do abortions. Constructing law in such a way forced abortion to go to the “underground”.

  22. I stand for life. For me abortion is unethical and unmoral. If women does not want the child, she can always give it for adoption, there are a lot of people in need .
