The world of advertising. PART III

Another interesting topic when talking about advertising is product placement. Sometimes, when we watch TV, in movies and in TV series, somewhere in the background we notice a trademark or a logotype; sometimes the main character who we identify with uses the services of a certain company. That kind of message is sometimes pretty straightforward, sometimes well hidden, and is not at all uncommon these days.

One of the most obvious examples is House MD, who always wears Nike shoes, uses an iPhone and an Apple MacBook:

Another good example is the movie Cast Away, starring Tom Hanks, where the courier company FedEx plays a vital role in the story:

(The company even used the movie motive in its official advertisements:

Or things like Oreo cookies in Friends TV series and McDonalds franchise in The Fifth Element movie:

Increasingly often we can find ads in computer games:

In the last years we have spent a lot of time in front of a computer screen, using the internet, and the fact that this medium is so widely used among all kind of social groups makes interactive advertisements grow in popularity really fast.

Below, a campaign of office products made by TippEx. I think it's worth trying, it doesn't take too long at all:

The last thing I would like to write about is shockvertising. A risky type of advertising, touching very sensitive and controversial topics, which is not always pleasant. It causes mixed feelings among people. It is designed to provoke us. An example from last month, a photo shoot in Vogue magazine:

The last ad, promoting learning English as a foreign language :)

Have you ever noticed product placement in a movie you watched?

What is your opinion on shockvertising? Do you think advertising agencies should steep down to using that kind of campaigns?

How do you think the advertising world is going to change with the development of new technologies?

  1. I noticed product placement several times, but I can't remember exact examples. I think this time of advertising is banned in some countries, but I may be wrong.

I'm sure that shock can be a good therapy sometimes and (not very often) can be efficient in advertising. It's usually hard to predict its effect. Anyway, in many cases, I don't accept it, as I don't accept offending anyone feelings or any forms of abuses.

  2. I found another great example of product placement, if you're interested:

However, a lot of filmmakers is against that idea and don't allow any advertising in their movies, such as David Lynch:

I also found an interesting suggestion on how is the world of advertising going to look like in the future, I think it's really worth watching (a fragment of The Minority Report, starring Tom Cruise):

And for comparison, an old vintage commercial for Campbell soup:

  3. Yes, of course many times but I don't remember what and where excatly..
In many polish series we can notice some products of a popular brands, sponsors of the show.

It's depends, sometimes it's good to show people something important in very unusual way. So it makes humans eyes wide open.

I hope the world of advertising will disapear soon, but I think with the new technologies it's rather impossible.. Nowadays advertising surround us, commercials are almost everywhere and in the future it may look only worse.

However I love this commercial about learning english:)) so funny..and from all of my heart I support the social campaigns, seen as a kind of advertisement.

  4. I notice it very often. For example if you should watch any post 2000 Polish blockbuster movie you are granted to hear "Radio ZET" from the in-movie radio.Like you wrotein your presentation Apple products appear extremely ofen, sometimes their logo is hidden but even then it is not hard to know the brand. To be honest I don't mind that. Moviemakers have to use certain products and it would be foolish to expect that they'll invent a new car for one scene instead of using a bmw or something similar.

I don't like shockcampaigns I find them a bit too ofensive.

I know that in Russia there was a newspaper with a lcd screen inside showing advertisments of some well known brand. In my opinion we can expect more things like that in the near future.

  5. Great commercial of Fedex ;> it made me laugh :D
The last movie about learning english I have seen before but it is also good one.

I have seen a lot of product placement. One that comes to my mind is James Bond - Aston Martin ofcourse, Sony Ericsson in at least 2 last parts.
I think that such kind of advertisement is really good when wisely used. For sure it is not so annoying as those ones over the Internet where some windows jump in at the screen and one and only thing you want to do is to close it - I do not like it and I think it is not the best way to advertise. The same thing is with tv commercials which are very loud - when they start what I do is switching channel immediately.

  6. Nowadays commercials are everywhere. You are going to the cinema and on the beginning… what will you see? Advertisement of course. Also in movie there are many hidden ad. Watching TV is exactly the same. All in all it caused we ignore it. That’s why I can’t find movie with commercial, it would be much easier to find without.
Aim of shockvertising is to pay attention for ad. For me this is really bad solution there are many other option to interest. Shockvertising usually is balancing on edge. There always should be uncrossed barrier.
In future unfortunately in my opinion shockvertising will be normal. Even now commercials are much more shocking than few years ago.

  7. The Polish television, at every step, you can meet with product placement. Almost every program uses the prod TVN. placement. Watching Dzień Dobry TVN Rewolucje Kuchenne , or Na Wspólnej is hard not to notice the ads. Any use of the product must be well thought out that was associated in an appropriate way. Most 'kitchen' celebrities have their sponsors, which uses their products. An example is Magda Gessler, who is associated with Prymat. Personally, I prefer this form of advertising than a 10-15 minute break in the programs. But often they are too obtrusive and it is impossible to watch the program.
I am against promoting products for adults with children. Promoting with the shocking is interesting. now appeared the advertising niebiegam.pl shocking catchy slogan, contrary to what it is about. However, despite illusions does not encourage the non-sporting activities but be advertised drug for diarrhea.
Advertising is constantly changing. An example is the use of FB profiles to advertising a company.

  8. Of course I noticed this products recently I watched lot of American TV series - generally there are many business log.
Certainly chockvertising is a good way to draw attention on something. People remember things, product and places that in some way shocked. But it may have opposite effects - someone may have a wrong associate with something.
Of course that advertising will change especially with the present mobile technologies developments

  9. I have seen product placement several times specially in polish serials. I have to admit that I don't like this kind of advertising. For me it is too impudent when they try to pester us even during our spare time. Moreover in Poland it is really visible and aggressive. Some social researchs show that too evident product placement brings more harms than benefits.

  10. The truth is that without commercials those product, projects, movies wouldn't be even created. It's a phenomenon that took a part for years. Every big event is fully adjusted to commercial companies and their ads blocks.

Hmm - but Cast Away movie is not so good example. I'm a fan of Tom Hanks movies so... He was a part, actually a manager of the biggest carrier that time and that was FedEx. He was traveling by one of their plain and had accident - fell down and crashed in the ocean. So I'm not pretty sure if that could be treated as a commercial any way :)

The fannies project was (I'm not sure if it's still existing) free phone line designed in US, only for willing. You could call wherever you want completely for free but...before conversation you hear a commercial and after each minute as well. That should be annoying. 2 mins of call 10 mins ads.

  11. I noticed several times a popular marks at movies, animations, anime, games and other similar thing, but I don't remember what was there..

I think that shockvertising works sometime, if it connected about Earth problems, cancers or something similar I think it's good, but if it appears with kids.. it's a really bad idea!

I was working at advertising agency for 4 months so I know little about comercial and advertisement. So if there will be a new media then advertisement can change, remember before was only posters, but when TV shows later was a television advertising and others.

  12. Have you ever noticed product placement in a movie you watched?

Yes. All the time. It causes movies to be less realistic.

What is your opinion on shockvertising? Do you think advertising agencies should steep down to using that kind of campaigns?

Nope. I like shock humor so the shockvertising isn't so shocking for me. It's always something new from triter ads.

How do you think the advertising world is going to change with the development of new technologies?

It will be pain in the ass I can tell you. It will also be more invasive in the personal life etc.

  13. I believe that shockvertising is an interesting idea on advertising. I think that them more appeal to the recipient, in certainly better than ordinary advertising. But I'm tired of constantly watching ads, so mayby this kind of advertising, will be presented with less frequently and help me in this hard situation!
I think the advertising world will change with the new technologies.

Advertising in games. It is practiced for a long time. In not one game of the 20th century, I saw the ads. And in my case this is one of better ways to remember them. ING advertising from game Need For Speed Underground, I remember to this day.

  14. I hate product placement in movies that I watched. I guess that this kind of advertising is more profitable for movie production that for those companies that advertised them selfs in this way. As we can noticed almost all of us can't remind what was exactly advertised...

  15. Product placement exists in most modern films. Quentin Tarantino is the only director that I know who advertised non-existing products. To be precise he advertised products that he invented himself and reused in couple of his films, for example a fictional chain of Hawaiian-themed fast food restaurants called Big Kahuna Burger. Refer to http://www.tarantino.info/wiki/index.php/Big_Kahuna_Burger for screen footages :)
