The world of advertising. PART II

This time I would like to spend some time on TV adverts as well as show a few typical tricks used to draw the viewers attention.

For a start, I would like to show you a few commercials which have recently won the awards for the best TV adverts throughout the last few years.

The first commercial I would like to show you is an ad for Cadbury chocolate, showing an amazing creation of a gorilla playing a Phil Collins song on a drumkit. This ad helped the company to rebuild its image. Another ad is a musical collage, showing a mouse advertising Nolan's Cheddar cheese.

And now one of the most popular tricks - making ads starring a famous person (the halo effect). My next example shows a popular actress, Jennifer Aniston, and a very popular song by The Turtles played in the background:

Next is another commercial, using a cover of Survivor’s hit 'Eye of the Tiger', best known from the Rocky movie (you might have noticed this song used in the mouse ad in the beginning of the presentation). The ad is about a drink branded by Starbucks:

An interesting thing: an ad only shown during special events, as this Puma advert, another cover of a popular song:

This time it's rather an unusual advert, using a computer game world, in which a Toyota suddenly appears. The ad was made by one of the world's most famous advertising agencies, Saatchi & Saatchi:

Here's another brilliant ad, very well-known recently, especially to Star Wars fans. This time a Volkswagen:

Apart from the entertainment value commercials sometimes serve an educational purpose. Here are two brilliant public service announcements: 'Children see, children do. Make your influence positive' and 'Heaven can wait. Belt up.'

What's your favorite TV ad and which one is the most irritating and repulsive?

Have you seen any of the ads before?

What do you think about public service announcements - campaigns made for the public good? Do you think there should be more of them or maybe they are only made for someone's profit?

  1. Some of these ads I have seen it and every time I have fun when I watch them:)
My favorite ad is "Walking Heineken Fridge" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mOvoO6eQDms&feature=related, and most do not like washing powder ads:)

It is sad but, I think public service announcements is just to let someone make money ..

  2. The Volkswagen ad is brilliant! I've seen it already on television and it's one of my favourite lately.

I like ads which are funny and in most cases children play the main role (as seen in the VW ad).

Ads are of course made for someone's profit, but they are important to raise brand awareness. They do not even have to advertise a specific product. The main goal is to create a bond between the brand and the customer.

  3. I've also seen some of these ads before and they are all impressive. I don't have a TV, so I don't know what's on the top right now, but I could recommend this one:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0qQnDARK5s
It's a funny IKEA commercial directed to adult audience.

I believe that idea of ad campaigns made for public good is very alluring, but I don't like it. I'm not sure, if these campaigns can change the world, but I know that they are financed from public money. Yours and mine. They are very expensive. Sometimes I don't agree with them and I definitely wouldn't spend a coin on them if I had any choice.

  4. @Asia: The IKEA ad was hilarious!

To those of you who liked the Volkswagen advert with a small Lord Vader, I would like to show a parody of that ad produced by MARVEL company to promote a new movie about a superhero named Thor:

Here's a very funny commercial for Jim Beam:

And finally my favorite TV commercial for Harley Davidson motorcycles, and maybe surprisingly, it's not a jokey commercial at all:

  5. Definietely my fave ad is this one (maybe some of us have seen it, I gave you this link in my presentation about commercials last term)

I like also this one, panda cheese commercial:

I think I've seen maybe one of the ads you presented.. the best in my opinion is this with footbal hooligans, it really makes me laugh:) thank you

Social campaigns as I wrote in the next part of your presenation are very important and if they're good they can really help. I know couple of really effective public service announcements as you called them. Here I have an example, check this out:

'heaven can wait' is really good as well. And I think it makes an impression. We need such a campaigns to wake up people and the best way to do that is shock them.

  7. Obviously the most irritating ones are the cheap beauty products and washing powders adverts. They all seem to be very alike and yet still producers think it's okay to produce another crappy commercial like Dosia washing powder series ;)

I've seen most of the ads presented by you so far. "Truly Madly Deeply" is by far my favourite one.

What do you think about public service announcements - campaigns made for the public good? Do you think there should be more of them or maybe they are only made for someone's profit?
I think public announcements are very useful and important for the society. In Great Britain to limit the numbers of fatal accidents BBC has issued a series of violent commercials showing your people being killed on the road, because of not having their belts fastened or simply due to reckless driving.

  8. Frankly I don't know, I don't have TV on my flat, everything I need I find on the internet or on the town. I don't know what may be my favorite ad, maybe superbowl - always interesting ads. You can find them on YT. For example, at this link:
    http://www.youtube.com/results?search=Search&resnum=0&oi=spell&search_query=super+bowl+commercials+2011&spell=1&suggested_categories=24%2C2%2C25%2C43%2C23&sa=X

I saw some of the ads that are placed in a presentation. It will be VW Heineken ads.

I think that everything that is shown on TV is primarily guided by profit.

  9. I do really like IKEA commercials.
    1) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_PR3LXnDnk
    And that famous "PRZEPRAAAASZAM".
    2) and that one with a small kid throwing the stone through the sea... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4vj5q232EBo&feature

I'm not sure if you remember, there was an Ego company and their commercials about 'pension fund' - old man is jumping on the armchair with the skis on his feet and his wife is standing near home-fan throwing the feathers.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aa3p25hQmYs

There are thousands of ads didn't emitted on the TV because of their, hmm how shell I put it... 'sense of humor' . Just to type funny commercials over the Internet.
Few of them if you don't mind :)
    1) condoms one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fitxofd7kOA&feature=related

    2) jogging one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w4EnnlZf2j0&feature=related

  11. I have seen most of these commercials ;) To me VW ad is cool. But I’d like to show you something. Probably you know some very popular game which is called... Angry Birds! Yes, everybody knows it. There is some kind of live version of this game made by T-mobile: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jzIBZQkj6SY .It is used as an T-mobile ad and it is quietly brilliant! Isn’t it? ;)

  12. What's your favorite TV ad and which one is the most irritating and repulsive?

    Don't have any - I hate them all! :)

Have you seen any of the ads before?

    Yes, accidentally.

What do you think about public service announcements - campaigns made for the public good? Do you think there should be more of them or maybe they are only made for someone's profit?

As I'm a conspiracy-type-of-mind I think that officials very rarely make something good for people to live better. Probably they bought those ads from family etc.

  13. The best one for me was Starbucks with 'Eye of the Tiger':). Also very good was Volkswagen commercial. It was not only directed to Star War funs but from my approach it was addressed especially for parents that can reminds the behavior of their children in the age of those little actor;)

Social campaigns are very needed even if it's profitable for somebody... People are not enough educated in some matters so public service announcements are really important way to let them know more about many not very common and obvious things...

  14. As I wrote before I’m not a “fan” of advertising, I don’t have my favourite advert. Most irritating one? I hate lost ones that are repeated sometimes even twice during one advertising block. I would say that most irritating ones are ones that concerns hair styling, colouring products. I hate when dubbing is made in a way that peoples’ mouths moves completely different than the translation.
